They are freely drawn with a speed-ball pen and India ink, and later amplified with crayon or other media. One starts with a full pen and simply allows it to follow whatever unconscious prompting fancy (or taste) dictates. The only evaluation can be aesthetic, based on abstract criteria, since there is no point of comparison with realistic phenomena. The shape of the drawing is often determined simply by the shape and size of the paper. It is probably as close to music as drawing can come, as when a vagrant theme seems to demand development, or a simple rhythmic statement calls for one in a different color, like a theme in the upper register acting in counterpoint to chords in the bass. Indeed, major drawings like this often develop from notes jotted down on a work sheet, simple notations of plastic linear ideas, similar in purpose to the first thematic notations in the notebooks of Beethoven.
